Public support among the Japan public for admitting more foreign workers to the nation has fallen below 60% for the first time in recent years, with a growing number of people expressing concerns over public safety, immigration and the impact on Japanese society. A nationwide opinion poll conducted in May found that 58.2% of respondents either "support" or "somewhat support" expanding the number of foreign workers admitted to Japan. Meanwhile, 33.2% said they "oppose" or "somewhat oppose" the policy. The figures represent a continued shift in public opinion. Compared with the previous survey conducted in 2025, support fell by 4.1 percentage points while opposition rose by 2.7 points.
