Richmond, Virginia’s Barack Obama Elementary School has been closed down indefinitely, as officials tackle the building’s mold and rodent problems. The school was originally scheduled to open on August 24 to welcome students for their first day. In a message to families on Monday, Richmond Public Schools Superintendent Jason Kamras said that teachers and staff setting up for the year had discovered “additional areas of mold growth (for example, behind bulletin board paper).” The district sent everyone home for additional testing and cleaning, per WTVR. Kamras wrote, “All of this is realistically going to take several days. So we will not be returning to the Obama building this week. Our goal is to do so by Monday. In the interim, we are working to get Clark Springs Elementary School ready as a temporary space. We’ll have more information about that by tomorrow. For now, school is closed on Tuesday.”
